The German Israeli Foundation, in collaboration with the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, hosted a public panel event on Artistic Freedom and Academic Freedom – Reflections on Current Events as part of Berlin Science Week 2024. This gathering brought together prominent figures from academia, art, and science in Germany and Israel, fostering dialogue on the critical themes of artistic and academic freedom.
The day began with a welcoming lunch for Israeli guests, followed by an invitation-only roundtable discussion featuring representatives from the German Alliance of Science Organizations and Israeli institutions, such as DAAD, Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft and Leopoldina. Participants engaged in a constructive dialogue on the state and challenges of artistic and academic freedom, as well as potential avenues for collaboration between the two countries. Afterward, invited guests gathered for a light dinner, allowing for further informal exchanges.
The event culminated in a public panel discussion featuring notable speakers, including Christoph Markschies from the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, David Harel from the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Menahem Ben-Sasson from the Hebrew University, Nili Cohen from Tel Aviv University as well as artists Roni Taharlev and Anna Schapiro. The panelists shared their personal perspectives on artistic and academic freedom. Each speaker highlighted these concepts with examples drawn from their specific fields, offering unique insights into how their work embodies and confronts these freedoms in today’s challenging climate.
The event concluded with a reception, giving attendees an opportunity to continue reflecting on the day’s discussions. Guests from the field of German-Israeli relations, such as the Israeli Embassy in Berlin and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, were also in attendance, fostering an exchange of ideas and perspectives.
