Award winning GIF Young Scientists’ Meeting: HUJI-FUB Digital Humanities Winterschool
Building on the success of previous collaborations, Freie Universität Berlin (Institute of Classical Philology, Institute of Computational Ancient Studies, the University Library, and Ada Lovelace Center for Digital Humanities) and the Center for Digital Humanities at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI) jointly hosted the HUJI-FUB Digital Humanities Winter School 2025 from February 24 to 26 at FUB’s campus in Berlin-Dahlem. This event was generously supported by the German-Israeli Foundation (GIF), the German U15 organization and the Division of International Affairs at Freie Universität Berlin, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research and strengthening strategic partnerships between the two institutions.
The winter school brought together 45 doctoral and post-doctoral participants from 18 institutions across Germany and Israel, selected from over 100 applicants based on their academic merit and research interests. The program was designed to provide a dynamic and interactive learning experience, combining expert-led lectures, hands-on workshops, a mini-hackathon, and collaborative discussions. Participants responded enthusiastically, praising the balance between theoretical foundations and practical application, as well as the opportunity to network and explore collaborative research opportunities. The event’s success reinforces the importance of continued funding and institutional support to sustain and expand this growing academic exchange.
The HUJI-FUB Digital Humanities Winter School 2025 centered on emerging technologies in Digital Humanities, particularly the applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) in research. The diverse and interdisciplinary program allowed participants to explore new methodologies and tools while engaging in interactive discussions and hands-on experimentation.
The joint initiative has been awarded the Second Place in the Hebrew University’s Excellence in Internationalization Award for the academic year 5785 (2024–2025). The award recognizes exceptional initiatives that advance the university’s global engagement and celebrates meaningful achievements in international cooperation. The committee specifically commended the Winter School’s deep bi-national academic partnership, its integration of teaching and research, and the strong collaboration it fosters between emerging scholars from Israel and Germany
