Advanced Diagnostics in Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Medicine, Oncology and Infectious Diseases - Scientific Exchange Symposium between Sheba Medical Center and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin
In an era where global collaboration is more critical than ever, leading scientists from Israel’s Sheba Medical Center and Germany’s Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin have come together for a groundbreaking Scientific Exchange Symposium. This two-day event, supported by the German-Israeli Foundation (GIF), brought together top researchers and emerging talents to tackle some of the most pressing medical and societal challenges of our time.
Opening the symposium, Prof. Martin E. Kreis, Chief Medical Officer of Charité, emphasized the crucial role of international cooperation: “At a time of geopolitical uncertainty, this symposium underscores the importance of international scientific collaboration. Both institutions, globally recognized for their expertise, complement each other by combining their distinct strengths in research and innovation. By sharing knowledge and fostering joint projects, we aim to accelerate medical breakthroughs and improve patient care worldwide.”
- Precision Medicine & AI in Healthcare – Exploring how artificial intelligence and personalized medicine are revolutionizing diagnostics, treatment, and patient care, including AI-assisted imaging and prediction models for cardiac and neurological diseases.
- Neuroscience & Mental Health – Investigating brain diseases and mental health, including research on neuroimmunology, epilepsy, and digital mental health solutions for crisis situations.
- Oncology & Immunotherapy – Discussing advances in tumor microenvironments, novel cancer treatments, and liquid biopsy techniques for early cancer detection.
- Infectious Diseases & Pandemic Preparedness – Examining lessons from COVID-19 and West Nile Virus, and strategies to strengthen global preparedness for future pandemics.
Beyond specific research fields, the symposium also addressed grand challenges in medicine and society, such as:
- Climate Change and Health – Understanding how climate change impacts mental health, infectious diseases, and environmental stress-related illnesses.
- Disaster and Pandemic Preparedness – Strengthening resilience against future health crises, from emerging infectious diseases to large-scale medical emergencies.
- Demographic Change & Aging Populations – Exploring medical innovations to meet the needs of an aging society, from cardiovascular medicine to neurodegenerative disease research.
A key focus of this meeting was nurturing the next generation of researchers. Special matchmaking sessions and networking events were designed to help young scientists exchange ideas, build collaborations, and lay the groundwork for future discoveries.
“We believe that science knows no borders,” said Prof. Joab Chapman, Director of Neuroimmunology at Sheba Medical Center. “By learning from each other, we can drive innovation and create real impact.” His German counterpart, Prof. Friedemann Paul, Director of Charité’s Experimental and Clinical Research Center, echoed this sentiment: “Fostering young talent and interdisciplinary teamwork is the key to solving today’s medical challenges.”
“That is why both Sheba and Charité will continue to support emerging scientists by providing competitive seed funds,” adds Prof. Dror Harats, Executive Vice President for Research and Development at Sheba Medical Center. “These resources will allow young researchers to design innovative projects and apply for larger international funding programs, ensuring that promising research ideas have the support they need to thrive.”
The strength of the Sheba-Charité partnership is evident in the fact that, despite the pandemic and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, colleagues from both institutions continue to travel, support projects, and exchange best practices. Their collaboration extends beyond research, covering strategic management topics such as innovation management, IT and data exchange, and disaster preparedness, ensuring that both hospitals remain at the forefront of academic medicine in an evolving global landscape.
