Workshop on CO₂ Conversion to Value-Added Chemicals and Fuels
Lead Academic Institutions:
Technische Universität Berlin (Prof. Peter Strasser),
Technische Universität Darmstadt (Prof. Ulrike Kramm),
Bar-Ilan University (Prof. Lior Elbaz and Dr. Hannah-Noa Barad)
Venue: Technische Universität Berlin
Workshop Overview
The workshop on CO₂ Conversion to Value-Added Chemicals and Fuels brought together leading scientists and young researchers from Israel and Germany to explore innovative approaches for transforming CO₂ into useful products. The event was jointly organized by Technische Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Darmstadt and Bar-Ilan University, and took place at TU Berlin.
The scientific program covered a broad range of cutting-edge topics, including the following subtopics:
- Catalysts for CO₂ Conversion – thermochemical, photo- and electro-chemical methods
Capture and Utilization of CO₂ – conversion for the production of small molecules, chemicals and sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs)
In-situ/Operando Techniques – for studying CO₂ conversion mechanisms and improving selectivity
AI and DFT Methods – computational approaches supporting CO₂ conversion research
Participants and Keynote Speakers
The workshop gathered 36 young scientists, including 5 postdoctoral fellows and 31 graduate students. Of these, 21 participants came from Israel and 15 from Germany, reflecting the strong bilateral engagement that GIF continues to foster.
Keynote lectures were delivered by:
Prof. Mehtap Özaslan, University of Hamburg
Prof. Christina Roth, University of Bayreuth
Dr. Shahar Dery, Bar-Ilan University
Program Highlights
The event opened with welcoming remarks from the sponsors, followed by an inspiring keynote by Prof. Helmut Schwarz, who spoke about the enduring friendship and scientific collaboration between Israel and Germany.
The scientific sessions featured high-level presentations that sparked lively discussions. Each session included a 20-minute discussion slot, encouraging participants to exchange ideas, suggest new experiments, and outline potential collaborations. Informal exchanges continued during coffee breaks, helping participants deepen conversations initiated during the talks.
The second day began with a poster session showcasing 12 posters, each introduced through a one-minute flash talk. In the afternoon, participants joined round-table discussions, where small groups explored key challenges and proposed creative solutions within the workshop’s thematic scope.
A highlight of the social program was the conference dinner at “Hummus and Friends”, where participants enjoyed an evening of informal conversation and cultural exchange, further strengthening professional and personal connections.
Feedback and Outcomes
Feedback from participants and sponsors was overwhelmingly positive. Both oral and poster presentations were praised for their scientific quality and the clarity with which young researchers presented their work.
Beyond the scientific excellence, the workshop succeeded in creating a collaborative and friendly atmosphere that encouraged the formation of new research partnerships. Several joint projects were already being discussed in the days following the workshop.
The workshop demonstrated the strength of GIF’s concept and the invaluable support of the Israeli Ministry of Energy, which together enable meaningful scientific and personal exchange between Israel and Germany.
