Welcome to the Quantum Future Academy 2023
Welcome speech by GIF Director Dr. Eric Zimmerman:
Good afternoon, everyone. Shalom.
Welcome to Israel. Welcome to TLV.
My name is Eric Zimmerman and I have been given the great honor of opening this two-week long Academy.
I cannot begin to tell you how thrilled I am to be able to welcome you all to Tel Aviv. I truly believe this is a wonderful welcoming city and I am confident you will feel at home here.
It has taken one year plus and many people to bring you here together.
Firstly, I must apologize on behalf of Ms. Shani Edri, of MOST. She took ill and is unable to join us today. MOST is the key partner in making this happen, in Israel. Shani manages the Germany Desk and discharges her duties with great diligence and caring.
With the hope I leave no one out I will mention a few people who have worked tirelessly to conceptualize and make this Academy happen:
Ms. Barbara Seimetz from the Embassy of Germany here. This was her idea. We would simply not be gathered here today were it not for her championing this initiative.
Shani Edri, Eliaz Luf, Prof. Avi Domb, and Dr. Rami Aharoni from MOST. תודה לכולכם!
Dr. Jan Suhren and Dr. Wolfgang Mussel from the BMBF. It is a great pleasure to welcome you here personally.
Tim Haupricht, Nina Pawlik, Leonard Klar, Ann Kristin Rink, Claudia Leonhardt from VDI and Munich Quantum Valley. A very warm welcome to you.
Prof Serge Rosenblum and Prof Ofer Firstenberg from the Weizmann Institute; they designed this week’s program. תודה רבה!!
Ms. Liza Katz, my colleague at GIF, for stepping in to pull it all together.
Finaly, to you 30 young scholars chosen to undertake this two-week journey. You are the stars here.
You will be introduced to the major academic giants in the field and to their respective labs and teams. You will meet some of the companies that stick out for their innovativeness.
You will take home new knowledge and experiences. More importantly, for me as the Director of GIF – the German Israeli Foundation for Scientific R&D, the flagship program since 1986 for Germany – Israel scientific relations. I hope we will see the seeds planted this week for future collaborative work. Next year GIF (www.gif.org.il) will publish an RFP in Quantum science. It is my hope that you and your mentors / supervisors back home will apply to us for funding, for either a project grant or perhaps a follow-up scientific gathering.
My mobile number is in the WhatsApp group. Feel free to message me at any time if you have any concern, question or suggestion.
It is now my honor to introduce you to our first speaker this week, Prof. Avi Domb. Schooled at BIU and HUJI – in chemistry and pharmaceutical science, Prof. Domb did his postdoc at MIT and Harvard. He spent time in the Biological Institute, in private sector and in the Police Force, as Brigadier General heading its forensic team. He returned to several academic leadership positions at HUJI and lead the Azrielli School of Engineering as its president. For the past two years he has served as Chief Scientist at MOST.
Please welcome, Prof. Domb.
