GIF Young Scientists Meeting: AkadeMIX 2023
— Meeting of the German and the Israel Young Academy —
20 outstanding young researchers, prominent in the fields of psychology, astrophysics, biology, sociology, mathematics and others came together from May 15-19, 2023 for a 4-day interdisciplinary seminar in Jerusalem.
The seminar is a unique and innovative meeting format, aimed to foster inter and multidisciplinary collaborations among participating scholars, by creating a space and time for writing retreat accompanied with joint academic and social activities.
Summary from Timo de Wolff, Chair of Die Junge Akademie:
The seminar does not only provide the opportunity to get to know each other, but it also allows to:
– tackle joint challenges and opportunities in our societies and,
– deepen the exchange between our societies.
Most importantly, the event is a unique opportunity to establish bonds between the members of the German and the Israel Young Academy.
The format of the meeting was organized in:
- Brief talks (15 minutes; following the idea of TED talks) that were hold by every participant to introduce (an expert of) the own research (in a way that is understandable to a broader audience) and that can initiate further discussions.
- Joint excursions (a guided tour to Ein Karem on Monday and to the Musrara neighborhood on Tuesday; a tour to the old city of Jerusalem on Thursday had to be canceled due to security concerns on that day).
- An academic round table on Tuesday morning, introducing and discussing the structure of the two respective academies, their activities, their way of taking decisions and their resources.
- Free time for individual exchange during the day and during the evenings at dinner.
From the perspective of the German participants the feedback was extremely positive. Our members were enthused by the hospitality of our Israeli hosts, by the great organization of the entire event, by the venue, and by the country itself (particularly those of us, who were visiting Israel for the first time, like myself). I have no doubt that most if not everybody will return and that further collaborations on individual or (non-exclusively) on academy level will occur.
